Research Interests

The research topics in our group are built around the interdisciplinary broad themes of energy storage, materials and environmental chemistry and are particularly aimed at the rational design, characterization of novel functional nanomaterials and their integration into various types of nanodevices.

1. Bottom-up synthesis of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles.

A first area of emphasis is the development of novel chemical routes for the synthesis of nanoparticles of technological interest. To this end, we combine simple concepts at the interface between materials, nanotechnology and inorganic chemistry enabling us to understand the fundamental issues of the growth and structural assembly of the nanocrystals.

2. Thin films and coatings.

Another targeted area of interest involves the fabrication of high quality thin films by soft solution methods. Our research on chemically deposited thin-films is a key prerequisite for the development of new functional materials and devices. Recent research efforts have been focused on the low temperature chemical deposition of semiconductor and magnetic metal oxide thin films with controllable morphology and predictable properties. These films can serve as building blocks for the design of complex architectures such as multicomponent metal oxide films with graded composition and nanocomposite multiferroic structures.

Our group is part of the Advanced Materials Research Institute (AMRI), a multidisciplinary materials institute that combines the interests of academic, government and industrial scientits (www.amri.uno.edu).
