The Department of Chemistry is housed in two buildings; a portion of the Science building is utilized for undergraduate chemistry classes and laboratories while the recently completed 68,000 sq. ft. Chemical Sciences research facility is dedicated to the research programs of the faculty. This exceptionally well equipped, state-of-the-art facility offers a superb research environment for the faculty members, postdoctoral associates and graduate students. To support the research efforts of these scientists, the Department also houses a staff of trained technicians and machinists, stockroom personnel and secretaries.

The strength of the Department's research effort is illustrated in the many papers published each year by faculty and students. The originality and capability of the Department are also evident from the fact that, in the last five years, approximately $20 million has been received in support of research from agencies such as the National Institute of Health, National Science Foundation, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Defense, and many other State and private foundations.

The Department believes that good graduate education requires regular interaction with prominent chemists from other institutions and industry, and therefore maintains a weekly seminar program. Visiting academic or industrial speakers spend a day talking with faculty and students about their research, current developments, employment opportunities, and present a seminar at the end of the day. Graduate students thus have an opportunity to meet and exchange views with a large number of leading scientists in the course of their academic training.

The heart of a University and of any department is the faculty. This should be the most important consideration for a student choosing a graduate school. As can be gleaned from this website, our Faculty have distinguished themselves in a wide variety of areas. We are small enough to offer personal attention, yet large enough to provide diversity of expertise, and a broad range of modern equipment.

The UNO chemistry faculty and some of their specialized research interests and accomplishments, including a list of publications, are summarized on their respective pages. Further details may be found in the latest ACS Directory of Graduate Research or by examining the University web pages at www.uno.edu. Inquiries to individual faculty members about specific research are always welcome.

AMRI

The Advanced Materials Research Institute (AMRI) is a multidisciplinary research institute involving government, private, and academic sectors. AMRI provides a unique opportunity to develop ideas and foster the development of novel research programs.

The interactions with corporate laboratories provide a synergistic pathway that promotes technology transfer and private sector involvement in the operation of AMRI.
